Biography

The best footballer in the world. One of the greatest players. A true champion. Unique. An incredible talent with extraordinary technical qualities. An excellent playmaker and a true organizer. These are the epithets that Ronaldinho was awarded by his equally titled colleagues Pele, Diego Maradona and Kaka. And it must be admitted that they were not mistaken. The athlete has proven his star status more than once, but colleagues and journalists claimed that he could have achieved more if not for his wild life off the field.

Childhood and youth

On March 21, 1980, a third child was born to shipyard worker João da Silva Moreira and nurse Dona Miguelina, a son named Ronaldo.

The family lived in one of the largest cities in Brazil, Porto Alegre. The father worked part-time at the parking lot of the Gremio football club, winners of the Intercontinental Cup and the Copa Libertadores. It is not surprising that his sons loved this sport in all its diversity, from futsal to beach sports. In 1988, the head of the family died of a heart attack while swimming in a home pool.

Ronaldinho received the nickname, meaning “little Ronaldo”, at the Langendonk football school, which he attended from the age of seven. The future champion came to this sport following his older brother Roberto de Assis, who showed great promise as a striker and participated in the 1987 World Junior Championship. To motivate Roberto, the club gave his family a villa in a prestigious area. But a knee injury put an end to the athlete’s career. The Brazilian media first started writing about the talented Ronaldinho when he was only 13 years old. Then his team Belo Horizonte won the match with a crushing score of 23:0. He was the author of all the goals.

Club career

Ronaldinho’s career began at Gremio, where he joined at the age of 15. The young man signed his first professional contract and managed to play in the 1997 World Youth Championship. A year later, the footballer made his debut in a Copa Libertadores match. On April 11, 1998, the guy appeared in a match of the Rio Grande do Sul state championship against Santa Cruz. The match ended with a 1:1 draw. In July, the young man made his first appearance in the national championship in a match with Internacional, in which Gremio suffered a minimal defeat. A year later, the young man conquered the Rio Grande do Sul state championship. The striker’s biography changed dramatically when he joined the ranks of Paris Saint-Germain. The transition was not easy. According to the “Pele law”, the athlete was released to another team on condition of receiving compensation 200 times greater than his salary. In the end, the French paid €5.1 million for the rising star.

PSG was then considered a mid-table team and was seen only as a springboard for Ronaldinho. After the Parisians’ 11th place in the national tournament, the striker left the club, which had missed the chance to fight for European competition. Spanish Barcelona did not fail to capture such a trophy. Manchester United and Real Madrid also participated in the fight for the talented legionnaire. The management of the blue-garnets approached Ronaldinho and his brother, who became the player’s personal agent. The result of the negotiations was a contract for €32 million. Ronaldinho became the star of the Catalans. From the first season, fans saw a brilliant game, beautiful goals and signature feints. The most famous trick performed by the player is the “elastico”, which is sometimes also called “flip-flop” or “snake”.

The FIFA Golden Ball winner as the best footballer in the world, the best player in the Champions League, two-time champion of Spain – this is an incomplete list of the titles Ronaldinho has won with Barça. In 2007, the native of Porto Alegre received Spanish citizenship. At the same time, another future legendary athlete, Lionel Messi, was shining in the main team of the blue-garnets. As the Argentine himself said, the Brazilian virtuoso was an example for him. Not the most brilliant performances at the World Cup in Germany and the 2008 Olympics, a serious injury and subsequent withdrawal from the team forced Ronaldinho to leave Barcelona. There were still many clubs wanting to see the champion in their lineup. Italian Milan was lucky. The newcomer took number 80, since ten belonged to Clarence Seedorf. From 2008 to 2011, the footballer spent time in Italy. The first season was difficult, everything was new – the language, the people, the environment. As Ronaldinho admitted in an interview, he had to persistently prove that he was worthy of playing in the main team.

As time passed, the golden period in the striker’s biography ended. Conflicts with the coaching staff began. The footballer was increasingly accused of violating the rules and was met in night clubs. This could not but affect the level of play. The contract amounts began to decrease. Clubs changed one after another. In 2011, Ronaldinho moved to Flamengo, and in 2012, Atletico Mineiro followed. Two years later, the player signed a one-year contract with Mexican Queretaro. Then the athlete visited Brazilian Fluminense. However, after seven matches in the new squad, he terminated the agreement by mutual consent. On January 16, 2018, the Brazilian announced his retirement from professional sports.

Brazil National Team

A native of Porto Alegre, he made his debut for the U17 national team, with which he won the 1997 World Cup in Egypt. Following the tournament, the young man received the Bronze Ball, finishing in the top three players.

Two years later, the Brazilians won the Copa America, scoring three unanswered goals against Uruguay. Ronaldinho, along with Rivaldo, became the competition’s top scorer – both scored five goals. In 2002, the striker became world champion as part of the national team. In the final confrontation, the Brazilians faced the Germans. Ronaldinho, who scored twice, led his compatriots to victory.

Arrest

In July 2019, Ronaldinho had dozens of properties confiscated, as well as his Spanish and Brazilian passports, for tax evasion. The athlete also failed to pay a €2.2 million fine for illegally installing a pier on his property.

Later, the footballer and his brother ended up in a Paraguayan prison for trying to enter the country with false documents. In April 2020, the offenders were placed under house arrest, from which they were released at the end of August.

Personal life

While still playing for PSG, Ronaldinho said that he had never fallen in love and, moreover, had never suffered from unrequited love. The footballer is not officially married, but he has a son. The child’s mother is dancer Zhanaina Nattiënella Viana Mendes. The heir, born in 2005, was named Joao Mendes. He was fond of football since childhood and followed in his father’s footsteps. In the dribbler’s personal life, French model Alexandra Paressan and Romanian Liliana Chevereşan were noticed. Although the player jokingly called a football his first love. It would seem that Ronaldinho had a serious relationship with his first beauty – the footballer even introduced the girl to his mother and showered her with expensive gifts. But the relationship with Alexandra, as well as with Liliana, was short-lived.

In 2017, the striker visited the Chechen Republic in honor of the presentation of the updated Akhmat club. After the victory over Amkar, Ramzan Kadyrov invited Ronaldinho and other guests to a restaurant. There, a funny episode occurred – the Brazilian danced the lezginka, after which he hugged the head of the region. After some time, the champion began a relationship with two lovers at once. His chosen ones were Priscilla Coelho and Beatriz Souza. At that time, the Spanish media wrote that the footballer was preparing for a double wedding. Moreover, such a scenario suited both girls.

The celebration was planned for August 2018. However, in the end, the festive event did not take place: Ronaldinho denied rumors about marriage and called them “a huge lie”. Later, the “brides” bored the athlete, so he began to spend time in the company of other girls and paid less attention to his chosen ones. Priscilla said that the winner of the “Golden Ball” avoided her, stopped financing her and even avoided talking. This is where the striker’s double relationship ended.

At the end of February 2021, Ronaldinho’s mother died due to complications related to the coronavirus. The farewell ceremony took place in Porto Alegre, but the star heir did not attend the funeral. According to his sister Daisy, he did not find the moral strength to see his mother off on her final journey. In 2023, it became known that the legendary player’s son signed a contract with the Barcelona youth team. Ronaldinho maintains an Instagram account, where he posts not only sports photos, but also personal photos.
